SPLIT-BELT used in the Human Performance Lab at Marquette University

Human Performance Lab

Marquette University is taking on creating an unweighting system for this prototype to allow a user a free range of motion while alleviating weight
and assisting in balance. They will be researching the increases in recovery speed for physical therapy by manipulating various
elements of motion
that will affect a user's balance.
The aluminum structure built around the system currently is where multiple cameras are mounted for a 360 degree view of how the user moves
on the equipment. The three monitors will be used to display gait feed back and
give a user visual cues of actions to perform. The apparatus
under the Woodway SPLIT-BELT is a motion base similar
to the ones used in flight simulators and rollercoaster simulators.
This prototype is based around helping spinal cord injured patients, stroke victims and neurologically damaged patients who all lack balance in walking.

Manual Therapy Meets The Manual Treadmill

Jason Wanstreet the Project Walk Floor Manager in Carlsbad, CA shares why they use the Curve manual treadmill as a gait rehabilitation tool in their Carlsbad, CA facility. Project Walk exists to provide an improved quality of life for people with spinal cord injuries through intense activity-based spinal cord injury recovery programs, education, support and encouragement.

How are you using the manual treadmill in your facility?
“The Woodway treadmill is superior to a traditional treadmill because it forces the user to load into the support leg and allows for proper swing phase mechanics because of our clients inhibited dorsi flexion. The curvature allows for proper toe off, swing phase, heel-strike, and support phase.
The curvature of the manual treadmill enforces proper gravity and momentum which are chief sources of motion for the swing phase.”

Why a manual treadmill vs motorized treadmill?
“The curvature and the fact that it is a manual versus a motorized treadmill encouraging proper weight distribution in the support phase of the gait. If the weight is not properly distributed through the support phase the treadmill is hard to move; thus providing feedback of improper weight distribution.
The motorized treadmill does not encourage proper weight distribution and doesn’t allow time for proper support phase.”

What patients are you putting on the treadmill?
“Phase IV and Phase V clients of the Dardzinsky method, gait training clients ranging from Cervical to Lumbar level of Spinal Cord Injury.”

What outcomes are you seeing from those that you’ve put on the treadmill?
“Clients see increases in proprioception and feedback of their gait pattern. Proper weight distribution, momentum, stretch reflex, and load bearing are accomplished on the Woodway treadmill providing a much better platform to teach a proper gait pattern.”
